A picture’s worth a thousand words, but what about a song?

Brownstones, water towers, trees, skyscrapers
Writers, prize fighters and Wall Street traders
We come together on the subway cars
Diversity unified, whoever you are
We’re doing fine on the One and Nine line
On the L we’re doin’ swell
On the number Ten bus we fight and fuss
‘Cause we’re thorough in the boroughs and that’s a must

Schlamm Dunk: April 2012

It’s April!

The flowers are blooming, rents are up (way up!), and we’ve just had the first weekend of t-shirt weather in NYC.

Business at City Connections is picking up as it always does once spring comes around. We’ve also had some exciting company events in the works. On April 10, five students from Fresh Air Fund came to the office to discuss working in real estate. We hosted a career day of sorts for them. Karen Lowe talked to them about becoming a real estate salesperson. Then I brought our visitors into my office to discuss the pros and cons of owning your own business. With all the Grateful Dead memorabilia in my office, we got to talking about my favorite band. One questions the kids raised: Why would a band give themselves such a scary name? Ha!

After an office tour, the kids enjoyed pizza, the NYC version of Monopoly, and more career talk with agents Javier Amor and Stacey Chametznik. We really enjoyed having them and hope to work more with Fresh Air Fund in the future.

For two months now, City Connections has enjoyed a monthly Spin and Salad Night. We have a private spin class exclusively for our team and then go to Just Salad after that. Anyone can sign up. I think this is a great way for us to not only have fun together, but also to generate some positive peer pressure on the health front. Being physically active benefits every aspect of your life — your work, relationships, mental well-being, etc. Most of us start out the year wanting to commit to our health, but find it difficult to make part of our routine.

Spin and Salad Night is only monthly, but I feel it’s already made a difference at City Connections. We all look forward to it, and participation keeps growing. As far as my own health goals go, I’m 32 pounds lighter since last summer!

Another goal of mine at the beginning of the year was to find a way to honor my late best friend Paul, who passed away last May. This month, I met with Paulie’s wife and some other friends to discuss Doing a Paulie, a charity we’re starting in his honor. A website is still in the works, but I’m happy to make progress. More details to come!

How are you faring with your goals for 2012? It’s not too late to reconsider where you are now vs. where you want to be. Take a step, chart a course, and start working. You’ll get there!
